Motion and clustering of bonded particles in narrow solid–liquid fluidized beds

This paper presents an experimental and numerical investigation of solid-liquid fluidized beds consisting bonded spheres in very narrow tubes, i.e., when the ratio between tube grain diameters is small. In beds, high confinement effects have proved to induce crystallization, jamming different patterns, which can be intensified or modified if some grains are together. order investigate that, we produced duos trios aluminum with diameter 4.8 mm, formed either 150-300 100-200 a 25.4 mm-ID pipe, were submitted water velocities above those necessary for fluidization. For experiments, filmed bed high-speed conventional cameras processed images, obtaining measurements at both scales. part, computed evolution same conditions CFD-DEM (computational fluid dynamics - discrete element method) code.
